An expression of heart felt praise is a feature of Public Worship inside the Presbyterian Church. Every Sunday there is a time of community praise before the service itself commences. Mostly this consists of gospel songs and well loved hymns. On the last Sunday of each month the young people, with instrumental accompaniment, lead the congregation in singing more contemporary songs.
Since 1921 the congregation has been privileged to have the services of just two organists. Mrs Maud Beattie for 51 years until 1972 and Mrs Dorothy Mac Queen from that date to the present time.(2008) Under Dorothy's capable and enthusiastic direction the choir of up to 30 members and ranging in age from those still in primary school to some qualifying for the free bus pass lead the congregational praise. An anthem is sung during the receiving of the offering and occasionally one of the members sings a solo. On the last Sunday of each month the members of the youth club and youth fellowship render a more modern song. Mrs Ruth Lavery and Mr Ian Lewis assist in training the young people who have also produced 2 CD's. Each Sunday Ian plays the piano to accompany the organist during praise. For congregational praise hymns are sung from The Church Hymnary. Revised Edition (The blue book) and New Redemption hymnal. Recently through the use of power point, other hymns and songs have been added to the repertoire.
In 2008 there have been two further innovations; the introduction of the Portglenone Psalms and using young people once a month to lead praise suitable for the children through appropriate material. There are the usual special occasions – Christmas, Easter, Harvest Thanksgiving and Young People's Day. Especially for the Harvest Thanksgiving Services the choir is augmented by former members. In all of these ways we seek to honour God and to follow that particular Sunday's theme for worship.
